Dental Health and

Root Canals

If you found you had a tooth with a diseased nerve in the past, it probably would have been lost. Today, root canal treatment can save that tooth. A root canal is a simple procedure involving one to three dental office visits. Best of all, a root canal can save your tooth and make you smile with more confidence!

What is the purpose of a root canal?

A tooth's nerve is not crucial to its health or function after it has emerged through the gums. The only part it has is sensory, providing the sensation of hot or cold. The existence or lack of a nerve will not influence the everyday functioning of your tooth.

However, when a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue, and germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. If this is not treated on time, an abscess can form. Pain and swelling will occur if the infected tissues do not get extracted. It will, in turn, affect your jawbone and can be detrimental to your overall health. Without the proper care, your tooth will most likely have to be extracted.

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

  • Unbearable toothache.
  • Pain while chewing or when force is applied.
  • Sensitivity to temperatures.
  • Dark discoloration of the tooth.
  • Swelling and tenderness in the gums.

Be aware because not all teeth that need root canal therapy are sore. Don't hesitate to contact your dentist if you experience these symptoms.

What happens during a root canal?

You will be asked to schedule one to three visits if you need a root canal treatment. During those visits to our dental office in Gainesville, our endodontist or regular dentist will remove the affected tissue. After that, the tooth's interior will be cleaned up and sealed. Lastly, the tooth gets filled with a dental composite. If your tooth has severe decay, our endodontist in Gainesville will suggest putting a crown on the tooth to strengthen and save your tooth from damage. Your repaired tooth will last a lifetime as long as you continue to care for your teeth.
