What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable natural-looking replacement teeth. You can get two types of dentures: Full & Partial.

  • Complete Dentures are given to patients when all natural teeth have fallen out or been removed. Complete dentures are placed instantly after the teeth have been removed and may need frequent adjustments during the first couple of months of usage. Conventional complete dentures are placed once the gum tissue has healed, which can take several months.
  • Partial Dentures are fake teeth attached to either an acrylic (gum color) base or a metal frame. It fits in between your natural teeth and is used to fill in where permanent teeth were removed. Partial dentures are considered a removable option for bridges.

Caring for your Dentures

Just like natural teeth, dentures require daily maintenance to keep them clean and free from bacteria growing inside the mouth.

  • When handling your dentures, stand over a clean, tucked towel or a basin full of water. If you accidentally drop your dentures, they will not break.
  • Your dentures are not resistant to plaque and tartar build-up, so you must brush or clean your dentures every day. For this, use a soft-bristled brush and gently brush the surfaces of the dentures while being careful not to break or distort the plastic. Between brushings, it's necessary to rinse your dentures after every meal of the day.
  • Use a gentle cleanser to clean your dentures. Many types of toothpaste, household cleaners, and mouthwashes can be too strong for your dentures. So, using a mild cleanser would be best to clean your dentures. Be sure to check for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval to choose oral hygiene products that are safe for your dentures, or ask your Gainesville cosmetic dentist about the products best for your oral hygiene.
  • When you are not wearing your dentures, they need to be kept damp. Cleaning solution or water can dry out, lose shape, or even crack and break when not kept in a denture. Certain styles of dentures demand specific soaking solutions, so be sure to ask your cosmetic dentist which solution is best for you.
  • Keeping your gums and tongue clean is critical, even if you have a complete set of dentures. Be sure to gently use a soft-bristled brush to clean your gums and tongue daily.
