Dr Paula Brumit
Dr. Brumit holds Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from Texas A&M Health Science Center-Baylor College of Dentistry. She is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and is approaching completion of the AGD Mastership track requirement to become a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry with over 4600 post-doctoral continuing education hours in all facets of dentistry.
Dr. Brumit is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Center for Research and Education in Forensics (CERF), Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio was the first post-doctoral Forensic Odontology Fellowship Program in the United States. She is an alumnus of the forensic odontology program of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and has been a member of the faculty since 2001.
She is Co-Director of the Southwest Symposium in Forensic Dentistry, a leading source in forensic odontology education for over 40 years. Dr. Brumit is a Forensic Odontology Consultant for the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office and also served the citizens of Dallas County in that capacity at the Medical Examiner’s Office at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences for 15 years. She is a Research Associate and Forensic Odontologist for the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology & Human Identification at the University of North Texas. Dr. Brumit is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal Of Forensic Odonto-Stomatology (JFOS).
She is a member of the Odontology Subcommittee of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Organization of Scientific Area Committees (NIST/OSAC). Dr. Brumit is a member of the National Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT), Region VI. She was a member of the advance team deployed awaiting landfall of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and subsequently identified victims of that disaster.
She was also privileged to assist in the identification of the victims of the 2001 World Trade Center attack. Dr. Brumit continues to serve as a consultant to the FBI, Texas Rangers, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Child Protective Services (CPS), Department of Public Safety (DPS) and other law enforcement agencies across the state of Texas. She has testified as a forensic expert in numerous criminal and civil court cases in Texas as well as outside the state.
Dr. Brumit is a member of the American Society of Forensic Odontology and served on the Board of Governors as Treasurer for that organization. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), a Past Chair, Secretary and Program Chair of the Odontology Section of the Academy. Dr. Brumit is only the second woman to hold the office of Odontology Section Chair in the 70-year history of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
She is a Diplomate and current President of the American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO), has served on the Board of Directors, Treasurer, Vice-President and President-Elect. The American Board of Forensic Odontology is the premier certifying organization in forensic odontology.
In February 2017, Dr. Brumit became only the second woman to serve as the President of the American Board of Forensic Odontology in the 41 history of the organization. It has been 21 years since a woman held the office of President of the ABFO.
Dr. Brumit is the only woman to have the distinction to serve as Odontology Section Chair of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and President of the American Board of Forensic Odontology. In addition she is honored to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Forensic Sciences Foundation. The Foundation is the education, scientific, and research arm of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences with $1.5 million in assets focused on scholarships and grants to promote research in forensic science.
As an integral part of the community, Dr. Brumit practiced general dentistry in private dental practice providing restorative dentistry to the citizens of Cedar Hill and the Greater Dallas Metroplex for 23 years. She continues practice clinical dentistry providing dental treatment to the citizens of Gainesville, Texas and surrounding communities at Saddlebrook Dental & Orthodontics.
